Korps Marinier
Korps Marinier
I'm an English guy, living here in Holland (Uithoorn), with a basic grasp of the Dutch language. I can speak Dutch but my written Dutch is awful! I would not insult you all by trying!
I am the owner of two ex-Dutch Marines Land Rovers. One is a 110 Defender from 1990 which saw service in Norway and the other is a 1979 Light weight which probably saw service with the UK/NL Landing Force. My problem is I would like to show them next year at Beltring (I'm also with LRCH) but I cant find more detail regarding the correct colour schemes and insignia.
They were both white (110 now green) and I guess would have been with a particular unit/squad (badges?). I'd like to find out more so I can restore them correctly.
Does anyone have such knowledge/photo's/vehicles/contacts? I realise I am a first time poster, but I am a new member of LRCH and have just been given this link by Gerard (thanks).
Thanks in advance for your time,
Mick

Hello Mick,
welcome in our country! I am a littled amazed you understand some Dutch, very well done.
Myself, I am a Dutch naval officer (actually lived next to RNAS Yeovilton from '99 to 2002 on a NATO tour) but the guy to talk to should be Dennis van Dokkum as he is a Dutch Marine himself and is part of the 'Prikbord' as well. I am not sure if he is in the Netherlands at the moment as our marines are really busy with an Iraq deployment and a small deployment onboard LPD Rotterdam in Liberia.
Dennis has a website: www.geocities.com/defenderone10/ where you also can see some pictures of the newest Royal Dutch Marines Wolf vehicles.
In case Dennis is not available, try me again and I might be able to find out along my own navy friends. Beltring is wonderfull! I've been there myself twice and you really should go there.
Kind regards

Re: Korps Marinier
Mick,
Welcome on this "newsgroup".
As far as I know there were not too much insignia or badges put on a 110 once being in service.
I do have a (small) book on the Land Rovers used in the Dutch army (mainly about the light-weight and 109, but it does contain some pictures of a 110) which, off course, you can borough.
I live in Haarlem, so that's not to far from Uithoorn.
Greetings.

Re: Korps Marinier
Hello Mick,
I was amazed reading about the lightweight being a vehicle used by the RNLMC. The eight years I spent in the service I only know they were used by the Army. Can you tell me the 110 original colour? Was it white or green? As you might be aware of, lots of verhicles used by the Army or RNLMC have send abroad for UN missions. Do you have the militairy registration numbers (mil. licence plate)? If you don't, the Ministry of Defence in The Hague can possibly trace original units for you by chassisnumbers, so you can find out more about the militairy history of your vehicles. I know this because Dutch Transport Agencies (the "famous" RDW) have entrances there.
Good luck,
Andre

Re: Korps Marinier
Hi Guys,
You have all been so helpful! Thanks for making me feel so welcome. I've lived here in Holland for three years now and, I like to think, am speaking Dutch fluently now. My grammar is a little poor but my pronounciation is better than most (I am often mistaken for being Turkish and not English? I guess Pluk van de Petterflet and a Dutch girlfriend works!
I've tried writing to the Marines, the Ministry of Defence and a whole lot more without any luck. One question here and five really good answers in no time!
Harry, thanks for the information and the link. I'll check it out in a minute when I've replied and let you know.
110, I would be very happy to loan your book if I may? Alternatively could you give me the namee and author? Maybe it is in the library? Please feel free to mail me.
Jan T, thanks for the info, at least I dont have to find unit badges!
Andre, Unfortunately I dont have the original mil reg numbers. I tried to trace the chasis number through the MOD without success (or reply). I'll ask my girlfriend to write me another letter in Dutch perhaps?
Bob Morrison from land Rover Monthly has told me the Light Weight was used by the Korps during joint exercises for the UK/NL landing forces. I was also suprised and am still a little sceptical. I'd like to confirm this as my Lwt has some interesting add ons (like a snorkel!, 24V and petrol) I thought only diesels were used by the Dutch?
Both vehicles were originaly white although the Lwt has a gloss green base coat from factory. The 110 is fitted with all the Korps add ons such as snorkel, Webasto etc and has been confirmed as from the regiment.
Thanks once again and please let me know if you think of anything else,
Mick

Re: Korps Marinier
Harry,
Great site/link. Just what I needed! Ironically my Rover looks more like the Wolf than the Defender. I would post a photo but I cant work out how?
Seems I dont have to worry about my 110 being green or the tear plate! Nice one.

Re: Korps Marinier
Mick,
I own a Marines 11 too, there is some info on it on my site (www.opwielen.nl, just click on the LandRover). I've put up al ist of fellow Marine 110-owners, if you send me a picture, I can put you on it too. I've got the original Dutch Marines user's manual too, I's trying to make a dbf-file of it, so people can download it from my site. Sending a hard copy will cost about 10 euro's.
Dennis van Dokkum told me there is a Marine-shop in Den Helder, where they sell different stickers.
Kind regards,
Chris Visser
