Kleur code motor 2.25d

Bericht door Arnoud »

Prikkers,

[lro] Re: Engine Paint

The engine color on my SIII, which I bought new in 1973, was a color Land
Rover called "Robins Egg Blue." It was a sort of light blue-green, more
blue than green. It was, in fact, exactly the color of a robin's egg. In
the color brochure I have for the Land Rovers of that era, this engine
color is quite obvious in the shot of the engine bay.

HOWEVER, others have reported seeing or buying SIIIs with engines of a
different color. I have heard of factory-delivered red engines, black
engines, and gray engines. I suspect the boys at Solihull used whatever
paint they got the best deal on. But Robins Egg Blue was certainly one
that was used a lot at that time, as it appeared in their sales brochure.

[lro] Series axle color

While I have an SIII and the question is about an SII, I suspect
something as basic as chassis paint color didn't change much over the
years. I bought my SIII new, and I can tell you that the frame,
springs, differentials, and axles were black.

You didn't ask, but if you're interested, the original color of the
engine block was robin's egg blue, the cap on the oil fill tube was
shiny silver but not chromed, the valve cover was silver, the Zenith
36IV carburetor was bare "pot metal" gray, the intake and exhaust
manifolds were dull silver, the air cleaner, radiator, brake vacuum
assist servo housing, steering box, steering relay, tie rod, track rod,
heater, battery box, and various other bits and pieces in the engine
compartment were black; the transmission and transfer case were silver
although "dull aluminum" would probably be a more accurate description,
the bottom cover plate on the transfer case was black, the parking brake
on the rear driveshaft was black as were the parking brake linkage
components. The fuel tank was black.

The shock absorbers were dark blue. The external hub components were
not painted but were a dark brownish-black metal. Same thing for the
spring hangars. The hub "caps" were silver-ish as were the original tie
rod ends. The original wheel brake cylinders were the same "dull
aluminum" color as the transmission and transfer case. The brake drums
were unpainted.

The driveshafts and U-joints were black. In the case of the U-joints
and the short driveshaft sections, I'm not sure if they were painted but
were instead simply made of a dark blackish-brown metal. The longer
section of each driveshaft was painted black.

The spare tire mount base-plate on the rear door was black. The door
mounted side mirrors were black.

All the lube oil fill and level plugs on the differentials,
transmission, transfer case, and swivel balls were painted yellow.

The Warn front hubs were silver with the recessed bands in the barrels
painted black. The hub controls at the ends of the hubs were bronze
with red paint in the line-up dots and black paint in the lettering.

The base plate of the Fairey Rescue Model (smooth drum) capstan winch
was black. The drum itself was unpainted. The opening fairlead roller
was bare stainless steel.

My first Fairey overdrive case was "dull aluminum," and the cover plate
was black. My second (current) Fairey overdrive is the same except the
cover plate is red.

I know all this because a) my memory is still pretty good and b) I've
never repainted anything on the vehicle since I bought it other than the
engine block.
