Substitute Defender
Oh God, the latest Land Rover Defender is set to become an anorak's delight.
With barely an exterior change to the classic Land Rover shape, the only telltale sign is a slight bulge in the bonnet that will have all those mucky Parka jackets twitching in excitement at spotting the new model.
The bulge (in the bonnet, not the jackets) is to accommodate the Defender's new Ford-sourced 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine.
Replacing the asthmatic TD5, the new engine has 122bhp and 265lb ft of torque for improved performance, refinement and off-road ability.
It also meets new emissions legislation that will see the Defender last until at least 2010.
A new six-speed gearbox also helps the Defender make the most of its newfound power.
The suspension has been revised to improve on-road comfort, while the interior has had a makeover to improve on the previous car's Lego brick appearance.
A new dash binnacle and centre console are styled along the same lines as the Discovery's, and luxuries such as an MP3 player connection and air-conditioning are now common to most models.
The revised Defender goes on sale shortly after the Paris show.

Bij de Lada Niva die ik vroeger had, zat de 6.00x16 ook onder de motorkap.
Best handig bij zo'n klein wagentje.
